IMS Ghaziabad organized an ‘Awareness Program on Menstrual Hygiene Management’ for female students, faculty and staff of the institute

Taking forward its glorious legacy of socially driven initiatives, the ‘Aabhaar Club’ of IMS Ghaziabad organized an ‘Awareness Program on Menstrual Hygiene Management’ for female students, faculty and staff of the institute on October 27, 2021. The unique, one of its kind session, was in line with the philosophy of Director, Dr. Urvashi Makkar to mould the young minds of girls into confident women of tomorrow.

In her address, Dr. Urvashi highlighted that worldwide, many girls do not have complete and accurate understanding of menstruation as a normal biological process. She emphasized that necessary counseling and hand holding must be provided to young girls at an early age so as to make them more comfortable and confident in handling the natural physiological change. Sharing personal anecdotes, she inspired the attendees to spread awareness in order to break the taboos surrounding menstruation.

The expert speaker for the session, Ms. Ankita Sukhwal, CSR Executive, Unicharm India Pvt. Ltd, shared that menstrual challenges faced by women and girls were made even more difficult due to the associated cultural taboos. She educated the attendees about the facts and significance of menstruation, its physiological implications and appropriate hygiene practices.

The students confidently clarified their queries on the subject during the open forum. It was heartening to see the female housekeeping staff openly asking questions on the topic which is probably considered a taboo in their community in an especially organized session for them. The interactive session, coordinated by Sushmita Biswal Waraich and Dr Laxmi Pandey , Coordinators, Aabhaar Club, was instrumental in sensitizing the attendees towards the challenges faced by the less privileged girls and women on menstrual issues. It helped in raising awareness and changing the associated negative social norms.
