FDP on “Successful Case Teaching: Bringing Field to Class”
on November 19, 2016, at IMS Ghaziabad
Under the stewardship of Director IMS Ghaziabad, Prof. J.P. Sharma, a one day FDP on “Successful Case Teaching: Bringing Field to Class” was organized on November 19, 2016 at MDP Room of IMS Ghaziabad. In his inaugural address, Prof. J.P.Sharma, stressed on the need for quality “Case Studies” in B-Schools. It helps in simulating a situation and drawing best-fit solutions by the budding managers.
Dr. Dwarika Prasad Uniyal, Assistant Dean,IIM-Kashipur( Dehradun campus), with its enriched experience of over 17 years in premier B-Schools, underlined the need for communicating properly with the learners. He initiated a discussion with the participants on video clip- “Cargo Cult”. Dr. Uniyal also took up a case on “Parable of a Sadhu”. During his discussion, he also stressed on the need for strong communications skills and theatrics in order to leave impact on the audience.
In the second session, Dr. Deepak Tandon, Professor (Finance & Accounting), & Programme Chairperson-PGDMBFS, of IMI, New Delhi, took up “Case Writing & Publishing” aspects. In his view, Case Writing requires updated information and data related to a company besides declaration from the CEO of the company. He also encouraged participants towards case writing.
The program was anchored by FDP Co-convner Ms Servjaeta Verma. It concluded with a “Valedictory Session”, where all participants were given “Certificate of Participation”, in the presence of Director, Prof. J.P.Sharma and Chairperson-FDP/MDP Dr. S K Dube. The Program Chair-PGDM DR. Tapan Kumar Nayak and HOD MCA Dr. Awadhesh Gupta were also present. FDP Convener Dr. Pankaj K. Agarwal, proposed a “Vote of Thanks”.
IMS Ghaziabad Organized Role play on The Speluncean Explorers, October 5, 2016
With an aim to provide holistic development to its students, #IMSGhaziabad, under the dynamic leadership of Prof. J.P Sharma, Director IMS Ghaziabad, adopted an Innovative Teaching Learning methodology; organizing #role #plays on peculiar and most popular cases for its PGDM Students. Learning by doing; #Learning by imitation; #Cognitive #development; better understanding of human behavior, situations and relations; #SWOT Analysis; development of new skills and insights into resolving problems has been the motto of these role plays.
With these objectives, a role play was organized on the case of “Speluncean Explorers” on October 5, 2016. It is the first time, when students of any B-School have presented a role play on the case study of Speluncean Explorers. Dr. Tapan K. Nayak, Chairperson PGDM, welcomed Guest for the day – Mr. Ram Prakash Singh, Advocate, District Court, #Ghaziabad. The role play was coordinated by Dr. C. L Bansal, Professor, Corporate Law and Governance and Dr. Shalini Aggarwal, Associate Professor, Finance.
“The Case of the Speluncean Explorers” is an article by legal philosopher Lon L. Fuller first published in the Harvard Law Review in 1949. It was the case of cannibalization in which five friends went to an expedition and were trapped in cave due to landslide. After mutual consent they decided that one of the friends should be killed and eaten by others so that remaining may survive. The remaining friends after being rescued were summoned to the court.
There was a panel of four senior judges and a chief justice in the court. Each differed in its reasoning and on whether the survivors should be found guilty of breaching the law. Two judges affirm the conviction, emphasizing the importance of the separation of powers and literal approach to statutory interpretation. The other two judges overturned the conviction; one focused on “common sense” and the popular will, while the other used arguments drawn from the natural law tradition, emphasizing the purposive approach. The fifth judge, who was unable to reach any conclusion, recused himself. As the Court’s decision was a tie, they were unable to reach any judgment. All the roles were well performed by the PGDM students and their performances were very well appreciated by the faculty, staff and students. They were awarded certificates of appreciation for their performances.
